Homework:  Activity in Mathspace

October 26: Today we learned to plot a graph from a table of values.

Homework:  Use the equation to complete the table of values and then plot the graph (remember to do 15 - 20 minutes only)  I have added some difficult equations as a challenge for those of you who want to give it a shot!

October 23:  Algebra Jeopardy!  (available in the Workspace)

No Homework on Fridays :)

October 22: Today we learned that we can determine an algebraic expression from a visual pattern by creating a table of values for the input and the output.

Homework:  Representing Linear Patterns Concretely (in Workspace)

October 21

Today we will continue to learn how to determine algebraic expressions.

Homework:  Google doc posted in the workspace.  Must be "submitted" electronically.  (When students have finished their homework, they must click "submit")

October 20

Today we reviewed last night homework (extending patterns). Corrections are in Hapara.  Then we began to look at taking a pattern rule and writing an algebraic expression for it.  This is very handy when it comes to figuring out a very large term without having to extend the pattern.  For example, the 254th term.

Homework:  The is a game posted on the workspace (Mathplayground).  Students should practice determining algebraic expressions for 15-20 minutes.

October 19

Today we looked at patterning as it relates to functions.  (Mme Mansfield was away today)

This week in art:  Students have work periods to finish their colour theory project.  This must be submitted through Hapara workspace.

October 16

Today we worked on order of operations.  Students were challenged to find an equation for each number from 1-24.  They could use any operation at all (brackets, exponents, multiplication, addition...etc.).  The challenge is that they MUST use: 1, 2, 3, and 4 (and they could only use them once!)  Congratulations to Carolina who found 16 equations and Noah who found 13!

October 15

Dividing decimal numbers.  Please see Hapara workspace for today's lesson and helpful links.

Homework:  Mathspace: Long Division With Decimals

October 14

Today, we began with a multiplication quiz, we reviewed last night's homework, then we looked at long division and with decimals instead of remainders.  We also looked at how to divide decimals by whole numbers and how to divide decimal numbers by other decimal numbers.

Homework:  Long/short division of decimals available in Hapara

October 13

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today, we relearned/reviewed long division and short division.  See the Workspace for tips and videos.

Homework:  Long/short division practice available in Hapara

This week in art (October 13 - October 16):  We are working on colour.  Colours can be warm or cold, we will look at how shade, tint, value and hue change the way we see colours.  We will learn about the psychology of colours.  Then, students will begin a colour project.  All links to lessons and project are in the Art workspace in Hapara.

October 9

Today, we had a blast!  We played Jeopardy to review the concepts we have learned so far:

multiples, factors, order of operations, exponents, place value, whole and decimals numbers.

October 8

Place Value using exponents:  WE explored the concept that the entire base-10 system can be represented using exponents:

the 1s place = 100 any number to the 1st power is 1

the 10s place = 101 10 only 1 time = 1

the 100s place = 102 because 10 x10 = 100

the 1000s place = 103 because 10 x10 x10 = 1000

the 10 000s place = 104 because 10 x 10 x10 x 10 = 10 000

ETC.....

Homework:  Place value with exponents #1-#12 (available in Hapara Workspace: 7-03 Math)

October 7

Today we looked at the place value of whole AND decimal numbers.  We talked about how to express numbers in expanded form using decimals (fractional notation).

Homework: Complete #5 and #6 on the 3rd page of yesterday's Decimal Place Value PDF

October 6

Today we are working on place value including decimal place value to the thousandths.  We reviewed how to order integers (whole numbers) and decimal and fractional numbers.

Homework:  Decimal Place Value PDF (available in 7-03 Math workspace).  To be completed in the math workbook:
1-Read the first page (listed as page 2) for instructions.
2-Answer #1, 2, 3, 4 in your workbook.  DO NOT DO PAGE 3

October 5

Today we had a math quiz.  Everyone did quite well!  Quizzes were marked and emailed back to students.

This week in art (october 5 - October 9): We will continue to work on our shading project (instructions are in the Hapara Workspace: Grade 7 Visual Art).  The shading project is due October 7th and should be submitted electronically through Hapara.  Later this week, we will Look at colour theory and the psychology of colour.

October 2

Today we finished up with the test review.  There is some math practice available to any students who want to study.   Khan academy practice  This practice is also link in the Hapara Workspace.

A few things to remember for the test (we went over these in class but it might be worth a reminder):

1 - The word lowest (fewest, minimum..etc) probably means we are looking for the LCM - the lowest common multiple.  To find the LCM, list out the multiples of 2 given numbers and look for the lowest one they have in common.  EX:

2 - The word greatest (largest, most, biggest...etc.) probably means we are looking for the GCF - the greatest common factor.  To find the GCF, find all the factors of 2 given numbers and look for the biggest one they have in common.  EX:

October 1

Today we took up the math review answers from yesterday's homework.  We only got half way through, we will take up the rest tomorrow.  The answers from today's review are posted in the Workspace under: Test Review Answers (October 1)

Homework:  For anyone who has not finished their review, it should be finished tonight so we can take up the remaining answers in the morning.  For the two word problems, you will see the words "given", "solve" and "statement".  These are there as reminders to students to:

1-locate and write down the information "given" in the problem.

2-"Solve" the problem.  I need to see the math (show your work).

3- provide a "statement" which answers the question.
